NMA wants privatisation

Dr Uche Ojinmah, the National President, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had recently urged the Federal Government to consider privatising the nation’s hospitals for them to perform optimally.

Ojinmah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that this had become necessary for both the teaching and public hospitals to guarantee the needed fund for their effective operation. In a twist of event The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has opposed the planned privatisation of public healthcare facilities in the country.

The TUC President, Mr Festus Osifo, spoke while addressing newsmen at the end of union’s National Administrative Council (NAC), Central Working Committee (CWC) and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union in Abuja. He said that the NEC in session strongly opposed the move by the Federal Government to privatise  Federal hospitals.

According to Ojinmah , as it stands today, in Nigeria right now, the way we are running healthcare delivery is more of a social service and not a profit service .”

The TUC frowns at this and says the privatisation that was done in the past, where has it led us to. Nothing meaningful has ever come out from the previous privatisation processes.
